Sony Introduces 3 New Receivers in its "Elevated Standard" (ES) Product Line
Sony STR-DA4400ES

Sony recently launched 3 new high-end home theaters receivers, the STR-DA4400ES, STR-DA3400ES and STR-DA2400ES. Each receiver includes Faroudja DCDi Cinema technology for upscaling all video sources to 1080p via HDMI, and supports the latest audio codecs; Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD, dts High Resolution Audio and dts HD Master Audio.

The STR-DA4400ES 7.1 channel receiver has a 120-watt amplifier (8Ω, 20 Hz - 20 kHz, 0.09 percent THD), six HDMI inputs and DSD decoding through HDMI. It offers high-definition video distribution to a second zone, audio distribution to three zones and picture-in-picture for monitoring of multi-zone output or an external video source. The model will be available in August for about $1,500.

The STR-DA3400ES 7.1 channel receiver has a 100-watt power amplifier (8Ω, 20 Hz - 20 kHz, 0.09 percent THD), four HDMI inputs, a 12-volt trigger, IR repeater and high-definition video distribution to a second zone (composite). It will be available in August for around $1,000.

The STR-DA2400ES 7.1 channel receiver has a 100-watt power amplifier (8Ω, 20 Hz – 20 kHz, 0.09 percent THD), a basic icon-driven graphic user interface and four HDMI inputs. The model will be available next month for about $800.

Sony Soutina NSA-PF1 Omnidirectional Speaker

This is not a concept anymore, the Sony's Soutina (NSA-PF1) speaker will hit Japan on June 20th. Measuring 1845x 325x 325mm at 12.5kg, the Soutina is an omnidirectional speaker where the sound comes from a 1m organic glass tube which reproduces sound vibration. According to Sony, this new technology provides a natural sound field reproduction.

For the specs, the Soutina speaker is composed of a 13cm woofer, 7cm medium driver and the tweeter is the glass tube. There is also a built-in DAC with bass and treble controls which includes 1x analog audio input (RCA), 1x coaxial digital and 1x optical digital. And to match your home decor, the speaker's glass tube offers the choice between three lighting colors including blue, amber and purple. As for the price, the Soutina comes for $8,000.

Sony HT-IS100 HTiB with Golf Ball-sized Speakers

Sony Japan is rolling out a new home theater-in-a-box system with cube-shaped speakers. As tiny as golf balls, each satellite measures just 1.7 inches on each side and providesno less than 45W, in addition to a 200W subwoofer. The HT-IS100 supports Dolby Digital/Dolby Pro Logic II/DTS and includes 3x HDMI ports, AM/FM tuner, S-Master audio system as well as the Sony's Digital Cinema Auto Calibration (DCAC).

The system goes on sale in Japan on June 25th for 90,000 yen ($890), but no word yet on availability nor pricing for U.S. and European markets.

The Sony Playstation 3 (PS3) becomes a very good system for High-Definition home theater, with its Blu-ray player and the newest addition of DTS-HD Master Audio decoding, the Sony PS3 is now fully compatible with HD content. The DTS-HD Master Audio is capable of delivering audio that is bit-for-bit identical to the studio master at super high variable bit rates (up to 24.5 Mbps on Blu-ray discs).

The new Playstation 3 with DTS-HD Master Audio will be available by simply downloading the upcoming firmware upgrade on April 15th, 2008.
